ASME Federal Pre-Election Statement

Written by: sueroberts

I am proud to share our statement for the upcoming federal election on behalf of the ASME.

Music education in Australia faces significant challenges at a time when evidence consistently demonstrates that learning music improves academic outcomes, enhances wellbeing, builds social cohesion, and develops skills for the workforce. Most Australians believe music is an important part of education yet not reflected in policy and funding priorities.

We ask all political parties and candidates to commit to and respond to the following priorities:

  1. Equitable access to quality and ongoing school music education
  2. Higher education funding reform
  3. Establish a musicians in schools initiative
  4. Expand specialist music teacher education
  5. Invest in music education research
  6. Support music teacher professional associations

We encourage you to share our statement with your networks and raise these issues with your local political candidates.

With best wishes

Dr Jason Goopy
