Australia is home to the oldest continuous artists in the world. Our art stretches back to the earliest times when our ancestors migrated to this continent and began to create art that was shaped by and, in turn, shaped Country, language, culture, and community. It remained, and remains, a cherished part of all life and creation despite the colonisation and genocide of Australia. As part of this, all forms of First Nations art, including music were suppressed and inhibited. This presentation will explore the impacts of colonisation on the experiences and expressions of music and consider how the music classroom can begin to be decolonised to support the outcomes of all music students regardless of their cultural contexts.
