2016 LIMELIGHT AUSTRALIAN COMPOSITION SEMINAR – HOSTED BY SANTA SABINA
Following a successful inaugural seminar in 2015, Richard Gill, Karen Carey and Andrew Batt-Rawden team up again to deliver another astounding compositional development experience for high school music 1 and music 2 students in years 8, 9, 10 and 11 on Tuesday 19 July 2016 from 9am to 2:30pm.
The workshop has THREE CORE COMPONENTS;
– workshop/analysis of students’ works
– analysis of a contemporary Australian work by Brian Howard
– discussion of the string quartet’s place throughout history
A kit will be distributed on the day that includes; all student scores being played through, the score of Brian Howard’s Voyage through radiant stars, as well as an educational analysis of Brian Howard’s work by Richard Gill that prompts students’ development of music analysis skills. A recording of the Brian Howard work will also be distributed.

FURTHER DETAILS
Students are invited to submit a work that is no longer than a minute of;
(i) solo instrument from the quartet, e.g. solo violin, viola, ‘cello;
(ii) a duo, e.g. violin/viola; violin/’cello; viola/‘cello; two violins;
(iii) trio, e.g. violin/viola/cello; violin/violin/viola; or
(iv) for the full quartet a complete quartet, no longer than a minute, which will be performed on the day.
PDFs of scores may be emailed to acs@limelightmagazine.com.au and are strictly due by close of business 11 July 2016.
We will endeavour to play through and give broad analysis/pointers on all works submitted. All scores being played through in the workshop are published in a booklet that is handed out to all students attending on the day. This encourages students to learn from, and be inspired by, each other’s scores.
In addition to workshopping the students’ music, we will also give an in depth analysis of the string quartet movement of Brian Howard’s Voyage through radiant stars. Premiered at the 2014 Aurora Festival, this analysis can be attributed towards the topic of “Australian Music in the last 25 years”. Should teachers/students wish to get the score early, the score is published by Wildbird Music (http://wildbirdmusic.com.au/)
Throughout the day we will analyse the string quartet’s place throughout history in reference to the pillars of string quartet repertoire including Haydn, Beethoven, Shostakovich etc.
