National President Update

Written by: Jason Goopy

I hope this update finds you well. It is wonderful to share news with you from around the country.

International Society for Music Education World Conference

Many colleagues will embark overseas in the coming days to participate in the 36th International Society for Music Education World Conference in Helsinki, Finland, and its pre-conference seminars. I hope everyone travels safely, and I offer my best wishes for your presentations and networking. I look forward to catching up with many people and seeing photos of your travel highlights on social media!

 ASME Insights: Music Education Research Unpacked

To support members with cutting-edge research, we have commenced a research translation series to provide short summaries of academic literature with succinct takeaway messages for practice. Preference is being given to articles from our Australian Journal of Music Education. You can access this growing series on our website, which is also being shared on Facebook and LinkedIn. Special thanks to Dr Rachael Dwyer (National Vice-President) for leading this project and offering two summaries to get us started: Project-based Learning: Toward a world-centered music education and Decolonising the Music Classroom: Five ways forward.

Together Sing

ASME is proud to support the national initiative Together Sing, which promotes well-being through music education and singing. Australian composer William Brown composed the 2024 song Come Together Sing, and you can register and access the song and support materials for FREE on the Kodály Queensland website. You can also view the recent launch video on Facebook.

NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into Arts and Music Education and Training

The Parliament of New South Wales is currently conducting an inquiry on Arts and Music Education and Training. While a state inquiry, it is likely that the report recommendations and outcomes will have national implications. You can access the inquiry terms of reference online, and any person or organisation from anywhere in the country is free to make a submission by 25 July 2024. ASME NSW has been working with members directly on crafting their submission, and ASME National has been liaising with ASME NSW, the National Advocates for Arts Education, and the Tony Alberts Foundation initiative, Music Education: Right from the Start.

Donations

ASME Incorporated (national) was registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) in June 2022 and was granted tax-deductible gift recipient (DGR). Tax-deductible donations $2 or more can be made to ASME’s Trust Fund and will be used for the following objectives:

  • The encouragement of young Australians in the fields of performance and composition;
  • The sponsoring of the development of young music educators;
  • The housing of resource material and provision of professional development activities for music educators

Donations can now be made on our new website at any time. If you are in a position to donate to ASME, we welcome and thank you for your financial contribution. Thank you to Dr Jenny Rosevear for leading this work on behalf of our association.

Finally, a reminder that you are also invited to attend our national Annual General Meeting via Zoom on Monday, 19 August 2024, at 7:00 pm AEST. You can register or note your apology here.

With best wishes
